Volvo Cars to Go All Electric

Volvo Announces Commitment to Electrification

In a groundbreaking announcement, Volvo Cars has revealed that every Volvo vehicle launched from 2019 forward will have an electric motor. As the first traditional manufacturer to make such a bold commitment to electric power, this event marks a historic end to cars which rely solely on an internal combustion engine (ICE).

Electric powered vehicles underlies the Volvo dedication to minimising its environmental impact and making the cities of the future much cleaner. As a natural part of this commitment, we care about the environment in which we all live. Volvo has established a goal to reduce carbon emissions by 2025 in an effort to achieve climate neutral manufacturing operations.

Volvo's Commitment to the Environment

Volvo is no stranger to clean manufacturing processes, with every European Volvo factory being powered entirely by renewable energy via hydro-electric or wind power. Additionally, Volvo remanufactures up to 15 percent of all spare parts, using up to 85 percent less raw material and 80 per cent less energy. When you drive a Volvo, you become our partner in the work to lessen the car's impact on the environment.

Paving the way for a new chapter in automotive history, Volvo is dedicated to embracing electrification. "This is about the customer," said HÃ¥kan Samuelsson, president and chief executive. "People increasingly demand electrifiedcars and we want to respond to our customers' current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish."

Five fully electric cars are set to debut between 2019 and 2021, three of which will be Volvo models and two of which will be high performance electrified cars from Polestar, Volvo Cars' performance brand. These all-new cars will be supplemented by a range of gasoline and diesel plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid 48 volt options across all models, marking one of the largest electrified car offerings of any car maker.

"This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car," said Mr Samuelsson. "Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have sold a total of 1,000,000 electrified cars by 2025. When we said it we meant it. This is how we are going to do it."
